[영어표현] for god's sake. / Sake 표현법 파헤치기

미드나 영화를 보다보면 sake 가 들어간 표현을 많이 보게된다. sake는 무슨뜻이며 sake가 들어간 자주쓰는 표현은 무엇이 있을까? 단어를 검색해봐도 잘 와닿지 않는 단어가 sake 이다. 

sake의 의미를 영영사전을 통해 집중적으로 공부해보자. 

• 1.구 PHR n
  If you do something for the sake of something, you do it for that purpose or in order to achieve that result. You can also say that you do it for something's sake.
  for the sake of 는 결과를 달성하기위함으로, 그 뒤에 목적하는 대상이 온다. 또한, for the sake of somthing 은 for somthing's sake와 동일한 뜻이다. 사실 이럴 땐, for somthing 만 해석해도 동일한 의미가 된다. sake는 이득, advantage의 뜻이니,  무언가의 이득을 위해 무언가를 한 셈. 즉 something 의 sake을 위해 something 을 do 함. 

• For safety's sake, never stand directly behind a horse.
  안전(의 이득)을 위해 말 바로 뒤에 서있지 말 것. 여기서 굳이 sake를 쓰는 이윤는 안전을 그만큼 강조
  
  
• 2.구 usu n PHR
  If you do something for its own sake, you do it because you want to, or because you enjoy it, and not for any other reason. You can also talk about, for example, art for art's sake or sport for sport's sake.
  이유없이 좋아하고, 즐기고, 원하는 것임을 표현하느 부사로 for its own sake를 쓸 수 있다. 
• Economic change for its own sake did not appeal to him 
  별다른 이유없이 경제적 변화는 그에게 양해되지 않았다. 
  
• 3.구 N inflects, PHR with cl
  When you do something for someone's sake, you do it in order to help them or make them happy.
  for someone's sake은 someone을 도와주거나, 행복하게 하기 위해란 뜻도 있다.
• I trust you to do a good job for Stan's sake 
  Stan을 도와주기 위해 너가 잘할 것을 믿는다. 
  Stan을 행복을 위해 너가 잘할 것을 믿는다. 
• 4.구 N inflects, PHR with cl feelings, INFORMAL
  Some people use expressions such as for God's sake, for heaven's sake, for goodness sake, or for Pete's sake in order to express annoyance or impatience, or to add force to a question or request. The expressions `for God's sake' and `for Christ's sake' could cause offence.
  for god's sake 는 거의 jesus christ 급의 뜻. 안좋은 상황으로 놀랄 때, 감정을 역설적으로 표현하는 것. 예를들어 빨리 가야하는데, 차가 막히고 설상가상으로 앞에 차가 제멋대로 끼어든다면, for god's sake 으로 짜증나는 감정을 표현할 수 있음. 영어가 좋아하는 sarcasm 임. 
  
  
• For goodness sake, why didn't you ring me? 와.. 진짜..(세상에, 이럴수가) 왜 전화 안했어?
  
  
• forsake
  sake의 반대말은 forsake 이기에,  disadvantage 의 의미를 가지므로 why have you forsaken me? 는 why have you ignored me / why have you stopped helping me 와 동일한 뜻이다. 간단히 말해서 나 왜 안도와줘? 왜 나 무시해? (네이버의 한글의미인 저버리다로 해석하면 "왜 나를 저버리는 거야?")
